Price and Auto Repair Quality

The question of price comes up often and is of great relevance in automotive service and repair. If you do some price shopping and get a few quotes, your natural instinct will be to question: Why is Shop A's quote higher than Shop B's? It is far more important to ask this question - What did Shop B sacrifice to reach that lower price?

The old adage “you get what you pay for” rings very true in our industry. Any company big or small, independent or dealer needs to be profitable to ensure sustainabilty or they will eventually be unable to keep up with technology. This limits the scope of the vehicles they are capable of working on and the range and quality of the services they can offer.

Dealerships are forced to maintain their capability, as they have to be able to service all the newest vehicles the manufacturers offer. Independents have a choice - stay current or fall behind and deal with the consequences. Too many independents sell themselves short by not charging properly for the jobs they do and/or maintaining low door rates. As a consumer you may be thinking “What? Everywhere I go auto service is expensive, how can they be under charging?” The truth is auto service is expensive for all parties involved and the true value of the work being done is not being properly communicated.

As an example, a direct effect of undercharging and low pricing is the quality of personnel a company is able to retain. Low quality employees equal low quality service and to you, the consumer, this results in an unreliable vehicle and poor value for your hard earned dollars. A good mechanic is hard to find both for consumers and employers. In order to provide clients with the best quality service, service providers need the best employees. Top level technicians require adequate remuneration for their investment in education and tooling and for the skills they bring to the company they work for. Customer service personnel need to have a broad skill set, requiring constant re-investment in training. High quality employees command the best wages, but in turn provide clients with the best service. This is the exact definition of value - not the lowest price, but the highest quality product for your money spent. You get what you pay for.

It is false economy to choose a less expensive repair. Something has to be sacrificed to reach a lower price - be it the quality of the parts, the staff, the facility, or the equipment. There are always compromises in lower pricing. Your vehicle is typically the 2nd largest purchase you make, next to your house. Its reliabilty, safety, and resale value are directly related to the manner in which it is maintained and repaired.
